The story of Lee Mavers and the La's is one of the last great rock 'n' roll tales drugs, fame, mystery, disappearance, obsession, reclusiveness and, most of all genius. In this work the author sets out to discover the truth behind Mavers' lost decade and gains an audience with Mavers himself.

He found 'em and it is a pleasure. I've been a huge fan of the La's since I first heard their one and only album. Macefield's timing seems to be almost right as they did start performing again this year to excellent reviews and warm receptions. Macefield did his homework like a dilligent fact finder. He got almost everyone to talk to him including, almost unbelieveably, Lee Mavers himself. The Man. Mr. Macefield did extremely well with the people he interviewed. His sheer enthusiasm for the music is what carries this book. Hell, it's what has carried the La's legend this long as well. Would anyone even care about the numerous (and mostly now debunked) rumours about Mavers if the La's music wasn't so incredible? Hats off to Mr. Macefield for pursuing something as personal as this is as well. Given the specific nature of the target audience, he isn't going to sell THAT many copies, yet he persued it as if he were in touch with all of the Beatles past and present. He did it for the right reasons, and it shines though in his writing. You feel his frustration as he hits dead ends and his enthusiasm when doors are suddenly and unexpectedly opened. I'm listening to The La's as I write this review. Cheers!Product details

At last someone has told the story of The La's. I was around in Liverpool at the end of the eighties and saw them play many times. The excitement and 'buzz' that they created was amazing -I'd never really seen anything like it before and I don't think I've seen it since !! The book is a little rough at the edges and does'nt go far enough in expressing the real reason why this band disintegrated - a cautionary tale. However, it does a great job of describing the characters in the band and of discussing the content of the music as well as describing the rise and fall. A must read for any music fan young or old.
