The most remarkable double agent of World War II, Eddie Chapman was witty, handsome, and charming. Too bad he was also a con man, womanizer, and safe-cracker. To the British, though, he was known as ZigZag, one of MI5's most valuable agents. To the Abwehr - German military intelligence - he was known as Fritzchen (Little Fritz), and was believed to be one of their most valued and trusted spies. For three long years, Eddie played this dangerous double game, daily risking life and limb to help the Allies win the war. He was so charming that his German handler, Baron Stefan von Gröning, thought of Fritzchen as the son he never had. The Germans even awarded him the Iron Cross for spying for the Reich! They sent him to Britain, with the mission to blow up the De Havilland aircraft factory. How he and MI5 convinced the Germans that he had accomplished his mission stands as one of history's greatest acts of counterintelligence. Until now, Eddie Chapman's extraordinary double life has never been told, thwarted by the Official Secrets Act. Now all the evidence - including Eddie's MI5 file - has finally been released, paving the way for Nicholas Booth's enthralling account of Eddie's long and extraordinary life.

While I am enjoying the book, its a bit of a tough read. Lots of background and researched details, but it reads a bit dry for the first 10 + pages. Once past the beginning it books picks up. I like it as a different perspective about the life of a real WWII Double Agent.

Zigzag The Incredible Wartime Exploits of Double Agent Eddie Chapman (Audible Audio Edition) Nicholas Booth Roger Davis Tantor Audio Books Reviews

I enjoyed most of the book. At times it was a bit long but enjoyed the intrigue. It’s a story we don’t hear much about.
If non-fiction spycraft is your genre of choice it doesn't get any better than Eddie Chapman's life as a WWII double agent. Impeccably sourced, this recounting of the harrowing existence serving both British and Nazi spymasters that Chapman experienced day-to-day, and living to tell the tale, is spellbinding. A must read for the WWII double-cross buff.
I enjoy reading about courageous individual acts during WWII and this book did not disappoint. It is the true story of an unexpected English hero who is no James Bond - but becomes involved in a series of events which end up helping the British war effort. No spectacular exploits in his performance as a spy but this omission makes his story that much more compelling and realistic.
An incredible story of espionage, if this had been written as a fictional novel it would be considered as too improbable. With Eddie Chapman we have a man who has become a career criminal just before the outbreak of World War II. Imprisoned on one of the channel islands for a criminal act, war breaks out and the Germans take over the island, including the prison. Eddie, being a perfect con man, volunteers his services to the Germans to spy on the English. When Eddie is trained in espionage and is sent back to Britain to spy, he immediately volunteers to be a double agent assisting the British in deceiving the Germans. Later, Eddie is sent back to occupied France to further deceive the Germans.
Both the Germans and the English treat Eddie very badly. The Germans try to renege on their promises as to financial reimbursement, and the British essentially leave Eddie without assistance after the war.
Had it not been for his actions during the war, Eddie Chapman would most likely amounted to nothing more than a common criminal with little to no redeeming characteristics. As a matter of fact, after the war Eddie struggles with what he will do with himself going forward. Without the excitement of the espionage missions he seems to be totally lost.
This is a fascinating story of the life of Eddie Chapman.
Have done a lot of reading about World War II, the espionage of the time, etc. This poorly written, albeit about an interesting subject, and despite an interest in the subject matter, I didn't get through it.
The dilemmas in which he found himself both in England and Germany. I thought it was slow reading at times, but generally a good read especially since it was true.
The story was written well with plenty of references and back stories. At times, it was hard to put down and other times almost overburdened with facts. It was interesting to see both the British and German spy workings. Had no idea how complicated it all was with ongoing deception, identities, etc.
While I am enjoying the book, its a bit of a tough read. Lots of background and researched details, but it reads a bit dry for the first 10 + pages. Once past the beginning it books picks up. I like it as a different perspective about the life of a real WWII Double Agent.
